Before we begin

Exclamation Note: Throughout this guide we will be referring to the server file as craftbukkit.jar, however when you download the latest craftbukkit file it will be named differently. Simply rename the file to craftbukkit.jar.
Exclamation Note: When starting your server for the first time, expect errors! This is a completely normal occurence as the configuration files have not been generated so please don't worry!

Windows Setup

1. Download the latest recommended build: CraftBukkit - Recommended
2. Place the craftbukkit.jar file into the directory in which your server will be held.
3. Open your text editor and paste:
 java -Xmx1024M -jar craftbukkit.jar -o true
 PAUSE
4. Save the file as run.bat. Running this file will start your server. (Note: Notepad likes to save files with the .txt file extension. Please be sure that the file extension is .bat or else this will not work!)
5. Run the stop command inside the server console to stop the server.

Linux

1. Download the latest recommended build: CraftBukkit - Recommended
2. Put the .jar in a folder, for this example we'll use a generic one: ~/craftbukkit
3. Move to the above directory in terminal with 'cd ~/craftbukkit'
4. Create a new file in the minecraft folder and name it craftbukkit.sh
5. Edit the file and paste this into it:
#!/bin/sh
 BINDIR=$(dirname "$(readlink -fn "$0")")
 cd "$BINDIR"
 java -Xmx1024M -jar craftbukkit.jar -o true
6. Make the file executable, either by running "chmod +x ~/craftbukkit/craftbukkit.sh" in a terminal, or by changing the permissions in the file's properties.
7. Then, in terminal, type '~/craftbukkit/craftbukkit.sh' to run to start the server.
8. Run the stop command inside the server console to stop the server.
